Valerie N. Colander lives in Fairmont, West Virginia, and is a 1978 graduate of West Virginia University. Her SF novel, Neena Gathering, appeared in 1988. Her stories have appeared in literary magazines, in the PEN Syndicated Fiction Series, and the anthology Tales of Magic Realism by Women: Dreams in a Minor Key, with a story forthcoming in Pulphouse. Her poetry has appeared in various journals, including Poetry. A poetry chapbook, Slipping Out of Old Eve, was selected in a Sing Heavenly Muse! competition for a special issue of the magazine in 1988. A 1991 recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry and a fiction writing grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, she is currently on sabbatical from her post as arts / entertainment editor at a small daily newspaper. She writes that she is "at work on a poetry collection, Mirabilia, which will include `Poem Found in the Scientific American,' and working on a short-story collection and a novel of historical fantasy." |
